Individual sessions can take anywhere from 3 – 40 minutes, occuring daily for 21 days. Every patient is different and some may need different courses of treatment.
Side effects are minimal, but if they do occur, they're generally minor and lessen over time. Side effects can include a headache, discomfort around the treatment area, tingling, spasms, or twitching of facial muscles, and lightheadedness. Only a small percentage of patients experience any side effects.
The effects of TMS therapy can vary from person to person, but many individuals experience symptom relief that lasts beyond the completion of the treatment course. Some may require maintenance sessions, typically administered on a less frequent basis, to sustain the therapeutic benefits over time. Our healthcare provider will assess your response to treatment and determine whether maintenance sessions are necessary based on your individual needs. It's essential to maintain open communication with our healthcare provider throughout the treatment process to optimize outcomes and address any concerns or changes in symptoms.
TMS is an FDA approved treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as smoking cessation and chronic neurophathic pain. There are a variety of FDA approved TMS devices on the market. At Unchained Wellness, we are in network with a number of insurance companies and the intake process does cover verifying your benefits and eligibility and obtaining any necessary prior authorization from your insurance provider.
It is important to note, that not all FDA approved TMS devices are approved for all FDA approved conditions. What does this mean? At Unchained Wellness, we use the MagVenture TMS device. This device allows us to bill insurance for MDD and OCD. The manufacturer of the MagVenture device just recently received FDA approval for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain; however, it will take several months (if not longer) before insurance will cover TMS therapy for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
Further, insurance companies also require us to follow their specific medical guidelines for treatment. While there are many different conditions that can be treated using TMS therapy, as well as a variety of treatment protocols, we can only bill insurance according to their medical guidelines. The standard treatment protocol that is covered by most insurance networks is five 19-minute treatments per week for six weeks, followed by an additional six treatments titrated over an additional three week period.
For further questions about insurnance coverage, please feel free to give us a call.
As with medications, especially antidepressants, TMS does not work for 100% of those who undergo treatment. However, the StarD Study proved that TMS is more effective than antidepressant medications. Approximately 70% of patients who TMS therapy for the treatment of depression can expect a 50% reduction in their depressive symptoms, and approximately 60% can expect complete remission.
TMS therapy is contraindicated and not covered by insurance for those with any of the following:
Seizure disorder
Metal in or within 30cm of the head
Neurological condition
Active substance use disorder
Eating disorder
Cardiac implanted pacemaker or defibrillator
While these are the most common contraindications, it is important to note that we will perform a thorough evaluation during the intake process to ensure TMS is right for you.
